Social Media Perspective

Digital Minimalist

I like to keep it real: The work and the worker speak for themselves.

The absence of my social media profile is a deliberate act predicated on well-defined principles. These principles involve a deep understanding of the technological underpinnings of social media and their broader impact.

A Technological Perspective

  • Privacy and Data Security: This is perhaps the most prominent driver. Social media platforms operate on data collection models that harvest vast amounts of user information. This data, often stored in sprawling data lakes and analyzed using machine learning algorithms, is used for targeted advertising, personalized content delivery, and potentially, predictive policing or other forms of social control. The concern about my digital footprint, the potential for data breaches, and the commodification of my personal information and so, I have chose to opt out. I understand the implications of centralized data storage and the inherent vulnerabilities of these systems.
  • Cognitive Load and Attention Economy: Social media platforms are meticulously designed to maximize user engagement, employing techniques such as infinite scrolling, push notifications, and algorithmic curation to capture and maintain attention. This constant bombardment of information can contribute to cognitive overload, reduced attention spans, and a phenomenon known as ‘digital presenteeism,’ where individuals are physically present but mentally preoccupied with online stimuli. Avoiding social media is my strategy to remain focused and enhance my cognitive function. It’s a rejection of persuasive design and the principles of behavioral economics weaponized for engagement.
  • Time Management and Productivity: The sheer volume of content on social media platforms can consume significant amounts of time, often without commensurate benefits. I prioritizing productivity, skill development, and I perceive social media as a distraction that hinders my progress. The opportunity cost of time spent passively consuming content is a key consideration.
  • Mental Health and Well-being: Studies have increasingly linked social media use to negative mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and body image issues. Evidenced by jury’s recent March 2026 guilty verdict against Facebook owners, Meta. The curated, often unrealistic portrayals of life on social media can lead to social comparison, feelings of inadequacy, and FOMO (fear of missing out). Furthermore, Gossiping, cyberbullying and online harassment are pervasive issues that can significantly impact mental well-being. For me, it’s a proactive measure to protect my mental health.
  • Ethical Concerns Regarding Algorithmic Bias and Echo Chambers: The algorithms that govern social media platforms are not neutral; they are designed to optimize engagement, often at the expense of accuracy and objectivity. This can lead to the formation of echo chambers, where users are primarily exposed to information that confirms their existing beliefs, reinforcing biases and hindering critical thinking. I reject social media due to ethical concerns about algorithmic bias, the spread of misinformation, and the erosion of civil discourse. I understand that the platform itself is not neutral but actively shapes the information landscape.
  • Intentional Digital Minimalism: This philosophy emphasizes reducing the amount of digital technology used in one’s life to focus on more meaningful experiences. Social media, with its constant stream of notifications and updates, often stands in direct opposition to the principles of digital minimalism. Choosing to forego social media is a way to cultivate a more intentional and balanced relationship with technology.
  • I like to keep it real: the work and the worker can speak for themselves
